The Ukrainian air force just stated that it had destroyed 26 of Russia’s 38 Shahed attack drones launched overnight. The drones, launched from the southeast, targeted several regions across Ukraine, resulting in a five-hour air alert. Damage was reported in various places, including Sumy, where residential houses and vehicles were struck, and Odesa, where a recreational facility and a gas pipeline were affected.
In response to the attacks, Ukrainian air defense units intercepted and destroyed the drones using fighter aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units, and mobile fire groups. Russia’s numerous drone attacks are part of an ongoing campaign to test Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and exhaust its resources. The Ukrainian Air Force used a combination of mobile fire teams, surface-to-air missiles, and electronic warfare capabilities. Despite successful interception, three drones managed to pass into Romanian airspace and were lost from radar.
This incident comes after a recent surge in drone and missile strikes from both sides. For example, Russia reported destroying 31 drones and 16 missiles launched by Ukraine in various places, including as Crimea, Kursk, and Belgorod.
