Tomatoes are being sold at a rate of ₹ 250 per kilogram in this state

The surge in vegetable prices has been widely attributed to the ongoing heatwave in major tomato cultivation regions and the significant rainfall, causing disruptions in the supply chains.

Uttarkashi (Uttarakhand): Tomatoes, the commonly used kitchen ingredient, are currently being sold at exorbitant prices in northern regions. In Gangotri Dham, the prices have soared to ₹ 250 per kilogram, while in Uttarkashi district, they range from ₹ 180 to ₹ 200 per kilogram.

According to a vegetable vendor, there has been an abrupt increase in the price of tomatoes in the area.

Rakesh, a vegetable vendor, informed ANI that consumers in Uttarakashi are facing the impact of soaring tomato prices. The prices have reached a point where people are reluctant to make purchases. In regions like Gangotri and Yamunotri, tomatoes are being sold at rates ranging from ₹ 200 to ₹ 250 per kilogram.

The notable increase in vegetable prices has been linked to the ongoing heatwave in crucial tomato-growing regions and the occurrence of heavy rainfall, causing disruptions in the supply chains.

The relatively shorter shelf life of tomatoes is also considered to be a factor influencing their prices.

Currently, in Chennai, the price range for tomatoes is between ₹ 100 and ₹ 130 per kilogram.

In an effort to alleviate the burden of soaring prices, the Tamil Nadu government has taken steps to sell tomatoes at a subsidized rate of ₹ 60 per kilogram in ration shops located in the state capital, Chennai. This initiative aims to provide relief to consumers during the period of escalating prices.

Similar to several other states, Karnataka has also witnessed a substantial surge in tomato prices in recent days.

In Bengaluru, the price range for tomatoes varies from ₹ 101 to ₹ 121 per kilogram. The significant price increase has been linked to the sudden rise in temperature during March and April, which led to pest infestations affecting the tomato crops and subsequently causing higher market rates.
