More than 2,000 civilians were safely evacuated due to a fire incident at a military base in Crimea
According to two Russian online media sources, explosions were reportedly heard in the vicinity for a duration of more than two hours.
In Moscow, on Wednesday, a fire erupted at a military training site in Crimea, which is under Russian control. The governor appointed by Russia stated that as a precautionary measure, authorities instructed over 2,000 civilians to evacuate the area.
The cause of the fire was not explicitly mentioned by the authorities. However, certain Russian media outlets indicated that detonations were audible in the vicinity, and videos displayed plumes of black smoke rising into the sky.
The report emerges a few days after Ukraine employed aquatic drones to target the Kerch bridge, a crucial military supply route connecting mainland Russia to annexed Crimea.
Sergei Aksyonov, the appointed leader of Crimea by Moscow, stated that they are arranging a temporary evacuation of residents from four neighboring areas near the military field in the Kirovsky district, comprising over 2,000 individuals.
The Tavrida highway, which traverses the peninsula, had to be closed off as a result of the fire.
He further mentioned that the authorities were conducting a “temporary evacuation” of residents from four communities, involving the relocation of over 2,000 individuals.
According to footage shared on the Telegram account of the state-backed Izvestia newspaper, which claims to depict the fire incident, columns of black smoke can be seen rising into the sky.
Two Russian online media platforms stated that explosions were heard in the vicinity for a period exceeding two hours.
Nikolay Lukashenko from Crimea’s transport ministry reported on Telegram that bus traffic on interregional routes had been “temporarily rerouted.”
As per Russia’s TASS news agency, the Tavrida highway links the eastern Crimean port of Kerch to Sevastopol on the Black Sea coast in the west.
In 2014, Russia seized control of Crimea from Ukraine, an action that has not been acknowledged by the international community.
Kyiv has consistently expressed its intentions to reclaim the peninsula.
