Email unsubscribing is now simpler with Gmail. This is how it’ll function
Google has divided the "Report spam & unsubscribe" category into two separate options: "Report spam" and "Unsubscribe," making it simpler to unsubscribe from emails on Gmail's mobile and browser editions.
Google has recently implemented user-friendly features in Gmail, both on mobile and web platforms, to simplify the email unsubscribe process. This update involves separating the “Report spam & unsubscribe” category into two distinct options: “Report spam” and “Unsubscribe.” Google Workspace communicated these changes, addressing the common frustration of managing unwanted emails.
In the web version, the unsubscribe button has been relocated to hover actions in the thread list. When clicked, Gmail sends an HTTP request or an email to the sender, requesting the removal of the user’s address from the mailing list. On mobile devices (Android and iOS), the unsubscribe button is now more prominently featured in the three-dot menu.
To further enhance user experience, Google has set new guidelines for bulk senders, defined as those sending over 5,000 emails. Starting in February 2024, these senders are required to implement a one-click unsubscribe link. This button will be visibly placed in the message body, and commercial senders must promptly process these unsubscribe requests within two days.
In a blog post from October, Google emphasized the importance of streamlining the process for users to opt out of unwanted emails. The company declared that Gmail recipients should have the ability to unsubscribe from commercial emails with a single click. This initiative aims to simplify the process and ensure that large senders adhere to processing unsubscription requests promptly within a two-day timeframe.
