Chinese pride grows as Huawei launches $2,800 foldable phone, but critics raise affordability concerns

Huawei recently announced the Mate XT, a tri-foldable phone priced at $2,800. This cutting-edge device has three folding screens and is regarded as a significant technological advancement, particularly in light of US sanctions. Many Chinese consumers regard it as a symbol of national pride, exceeding Apple in innovation.

However, the high cost has caused criticism, with some questioning its affordability and attractiveness to general consumers. Despite its technological advances, Huawei faces the difficulty of balancing innovation with market accessibility. Both the Mate XT and the iPhone 16 will be available on September 20, with the Mate XT believed to be exclusive to China.

“Apple hasn’t fallen, but Huawei has truly risen again,” wrote one Weibo user, China’s counterpart to X.

Another commented, “Times are changing. U.S. sanctions have proven ineffective.”

A video purporting to show Apple retail personnel in China visiting a Huawei store to attend the Huawei product introduction also became the second most popular item on Weibo for 13 hours, with 91 million views and more than 6,600 comments.

The announcement of the Mate XT emphasizes Huawei and Apple’s strong battle. The Mate XT, which was released shortly after Apple’s iPhone 16, boasts innovative capabilities that put Huawei at the cutting edge of foldable phone technology. Despite this success, the price point may limit its appeal to a small group of early adopters and high-end consumers. To reach a larger audience, Huawei must now create a balance between technological innovation and more affordable price.

Huawei’s Mate XT is more than simply a device; it’s a statement. As Chinese consumers exhibit national pride, the company’s capacity to push the envelope symbolizes China’s increasing standing in the global technology industry. However, Huawei’s success will be determined by its ability to broaden its appeal beyond elite circles.
