Exploring WhatsApp Pink: Understanding its nature and steps to uninstall it

Unsuspecting users are being targeted by scammers who entice them to install a pink-themed version of WhatsApp known as 'WhatsApp Pink'. To protect yourself from these scams and remove the app, follow these safety measures.

A circulating WhatsApp message includes a link to a version of the app featuring a pink theme, attracting attention among users. Referred to as ‘WhatsApp Pink’, the message claims that an official updated version of WhatsApp, complete with a pink theme and enhanced features, is now accessible for download.

Although it alters the appearance of the app to a pink theme, ‘WhatsApp Pink’ is a malicious application designed to extract sensitive information from users, including banking credentials, OTPs, photos, and contact details.

The revelation about the existence of the ‘WhatsApp Pink Scam’ is not recent and was discovered by internet security researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia in April 2021. Just this month, the Mumbai Police Cyber Crime Wing took to Twitter to warn users about the scam and provide them with essential guidelines to ensure their safety from such fraudulent activities.

How can one protect themselves from scams resembling WhatsApp Pink?

To shield yourself from such fraudulent schemes, ensure that you exclusively download and install applications from reliable sources such as the Google Play Store. iPhone users, on the other hand, can rest assured as Apple restricts the installation of apps from unknown sources.

Additionally, avoid downloading APKs sent to you by strangers or apps from untrusted websites. WhatsApp’s “Forwarded” label can be useful for figuring out whether a message was forwarded by a friend or if it originated somewhere else.

Here is a guide on how to remove WhatsApp Pink

Unlink any suspicious devices from WhatsApp’s list of “Linked devices” to get rid of WhatsApp Pink. When you install WhatsApp Pink, the security researcher warned, the app may attempt to hide itself from the list of installed apps.

If you want to locate it, open the settings app on your phone, navigate to the “Apps” section, find “WhatsApp Pink” with the pink logo, and then click the uninstall button. Make sure to uninstall them as well since malicious apps occasionally lack a name in the app list.
