Matt Cutts Prolongs His Absence Until 2015: Uncertainty Surrounds His Return to Google

When Matt Cutts, the leader of Google’s web spam team, revealed that he was extending his vacation into 2015, it stirred up a flurry of activity in the market. Additionally, by hinting that he might not go back to Google, he expanded a little bit.

Cutts further compared his position to that of a “lightning rod” that draws in unfavourable energies, saying that serving as the public face for Google in publisher-related matters would not be a wise use of time. These remarks were made by Cutts yesterday on “This Week in Google” in response to a question from host Leo Laporte about his leave of absence and whether he planned to return to his previous position at Google. Cutts’ roundabout comments raised some eyebrows regarding his potential return as Google’s head of web spam.

“Actually, I’m rather impressed with how well the rest of the team is performing. We’ll have to wait and see how it turns out, but it’s given them a little bit of a chance to experiment, look into new things, and, you know, attack issues from a different angle.”

“I really like the part of my job where I had to monitor key Google-related news, but it’s not obvious that using me as a lightning rod for disgruntled black hat SEOs, or something, is the best use of anyone’s time in comparison to focusing on other things improving the world for Google. We shall see.”

In addition, Cutts reiterated that he will be taking an additional year off, and he added that Google has been really kind.
